1.0 [ Introduction ] This guide is aimed at giving you all the information you need to use the Abyss with the least amount of trouble possible. You must be a paying Member of Runescape to use the Abyss, as well as being on a Members World/Server. You also must have already completed the Mage of Zamorak Mini-quest.
======================
2.0 [ Map ]
Once you are teleported by the Mage of Zamorak in the Wilderness you will appear in the Outer Ring of the Abyss, where you appear is totally random. To get to the middle ring where the Runecrafting Rifts are, you have to use a passage, there are eleven different passages and five different types of passages, and while the number of passages is always the same, and they are always in the same spot, the type of the passage changes. There are the following types of passages:
| Passage | Skill | Items |
| Burn-Down Boil | Firemaking | Tinderbox |
| Chop Tendrils | Woodcutting | Woodcutting Axe |
| Distract Eyes | Thieving | None |
| Mine Rock | Mining | None |
| Squeeze-Through Gap | Agility | None |
There are always two of each of the passages above, and one passage that requires no skill. You will always be able to use each of the passages, but you have a higher chance of entering a certain passage if you have a higher level in that particular skill.
If you notice, there is a rift for every kind of rune, except Astral Runes, to craft those you must go to Moonclan Isle. Even though there are rifts for Blood Runes and Soul Runes, you cannot craft them yet. It will probably be an update in the future where you will be able to craft them, for now, you cannot go into those rifts.
======================
3.0 [ Uses for the Abyss ] The primary use for the Abyss is Runecrafting! That's right, you can access every temple and craft any kind Rune, as long as you have the Runecrafting level, and that is without any Talisman. The Abyss provides direct access rifts to every temple. The catch, you have to go through several levels of Wilderness, into a place where you are instantly skulled, all your Prayer Points are drained, and where there are several high-leveled monsters! However, most Players who use the Abyss will agree that the benefits far outweigh the shortcomings.
There are also Runecrafting pouches available after you complete the Mage of Zamorak. Mini-quest, these pouches can effectively double you're Rune Essence carrying capacity. To get these pouches, you must kill the creatures inhabiting the Abyss, which makes it quite dangerous, but, with the addition of the Fairy Rings a while back you can now go to an Alternate Abyss, one that doesn't have the portals, but contains all the Abyssal creatures nonetheless. There are four pouches:
| Pouch | Level Required | Number of Essences Held |
![[Small Pouch image]](images/small_pouch.gif) Small pouch | 1 | 3 |
![[Meduim Pouch image]](images/med_pouch.gif) Medium pouch | 25 | 6 |
![[Large Pouch image]](images/large_pouch.gif) Large pouch | 50 | 9 |
![[Giant Pouch image]](images/giant_pouch.gif) Giant pouch | 75 | 12 |
As you use the pouches, they degrade and carry less rune essence. Degraded pouches are still useful and you can speak to the Mage of Zamorak at the center of the Abyss:
to have the pouches restored to their full state.

Abyssal Monsters also drop Elemental Talismans, which is fashioned in such a way as to allow it to be used at any of the elemental altars - Air, Fire, Earth and Water. The elemental talisman cannot be crafted into a tiara.

4.0 [ Runecrafting Strategies ] There are many different strategies for crafting Runes using the Abyss, I will give you a few, each of these strategies can be used for making every kind of Rune, just go to the rift of the Rune you want to craft.
What to Wear One of the most dangerous Abyss Pk'ers are Mages, they can Teleblock you, preventing you from trying to escape if you brought teleports, and they can also cast Entangle and the Ancient Ice spells, which keep you stuck in one place. So you will want the best armour you can get against Magic, however, you also need to have something relatively cheap, so if you die you don't loose millions, and you need it to be light. The best option is Dragonhide:
Head: A Elemental Mind Helmet has +6 Magic Defense, which is pretty high for something that costs so little.
Cape: Any God Cape will do, they have +10 Magic Defense, and they are free!
Amulet: A Glory Amulet is pretty much essential, unless you are using Strategy N/A or N/A. It gives +3 to Magic Defense.
Body: The best Dragonhide Body you can wear, the Black Dragonhide Body pictured here gives +50 to Magic Defense.
Shield: A Elemental Mind Shield has +9 Magic Defense, which is pretty high for something that costs so little.
Legs: The best Dragonhide Chaps you can wear, the Black Dragonhide Chaps pictured here gives +28 to Magic Defense.
Gloves: The best Dragonhide Vambraces you can wear, the Black Dragonhide Vambraces pictured here gives +8 to Magic Defense.
Boots: Boots of Lightness are essential to be able to run for a long time, they don't give any Magic Defense, though.
Strategy 1: Inventory:
Requirements: Make sure to fill the pouches, and if you don't have high enough Runecrafting to use all of the Pouches, just use the ones that you can.Make sure you have Glory Amulets, at least 10, all fully charged, this will last you 40 runs before you have to recharge them. You will also need either a Bronze Pickaxe

or a Bronze Axe
![[Bronze Axe image]](images/bronze_axe.gif)
To get to the Middle Ring all the faster.
Walkthrough: You will start in Edgeville at the bank, make sure to have the inventory shown above, and are wearing all the things shown above plus your choice of a Bronze Pickaxe or Axe. Follow the red path shown on this map:
The Red Circle is where the Zamorak Mage is located. There is a split in the path, if you take the right-hand path you avoid most PK'ers until you are almost to the Mage, but it is slower then using the left path. There are also monsters along the left-hand path. Once you reach the Mage, right-click on him and choose the "Teleport" option to get teleported to the Abyss. Run around the Abyss until you find a portal you can use (this is dependent on whether you brought an Axe or Pickaxe). Once you get to the middle ring, go to the rift of the Rune you wish to craft, enter it, craft the Rune Essence you have, then empty your pouches, and craft again. Now teleport to Edgeville iusing your Glory Amulet and repeat the above walkthrough as many times as necessary.
Strategy 2: Requirements: Use everything shown in Strategy 1 except change the Glory Amulet to a Dueling Ring.
Walkthrough: You will start in Edgeville at the bank, make sure to have the inventory shown above, and are wearing all the things shown in Strategy 1 plus your choice of a Bronze Pickaxe or Axe. Follow the red path shown on this map:

Now teleport to the Castlewars Arena using your Dueling Ring, get you Glory Amulet out of the bank, and teleport back to Edgeville where you can start all over again.
Strategy 3: Requirements: You must have already completed the quest Fairy Tale Part II, A - Cure a Queen (or gotten to the part where you can use the Fairy Rings). You must also have a Dramen Staff.Use every thing you would in Strategy 1 and 2 except don't take a Dueling Ring or Glory Amulet, instead, take a Dramen Staff (you can choose to replace one of the Rune Essences with it, or not take a Pickaxe or Axe). This also only works if you are crafting Nature Runes.
Walkthrough: You will start in Zanaris at the bank, make sure to have the inventory shown in Strategy 1 and are wearing the clothing from Strategy 1, but without a Glory Amulet. Go to the Fairy Ring and use the combination DKR to get to the Fairy Ring just across the River from Edgeville:
The Red Circle is where the Zamorak Mage is located. Once you reach the Mage, right-click on him and choose the "Teleport" option to get teleported to the Abyss. Run around the Abyss until you find a portal you can use (this is dependent on whether you brought an Axe or Pickaxe or didn't take one at all). Once you get to the middle ring, go to the Nature Rift, enter it, craft the Rune Essence you have, then empty your pouches, and craft again. Now leave the Altar, and go North, across the River to the Fairy Ring, teleport to Zanaris and bank, and then do it again as many times as needed.

5.0 [ Frequently Asked Questions ] Q: Which Strategy is the fastest?
A: - That would be Strategy 1, Strategy 3 is by far the slowest, and it might be faster to just go to Shilo Village to bank. It takes about 2 minutes to complete Strategy 1, give or take a few seconds.
Q: Is is profitable to craft all Runes using the Abyss?
A: - No, there are some, like Air Runes and Fire Rune which are so close to banks it makes it pointless and extremely useless to risk using the Abyss.
Q: When will I be able to craft Blood and Soul Runes?
A: - I have no clue at all, you will have to talk to Jagex about that.
Q: If I have 99 Runecrafting, how much money can I make an hour?
A: - Well assuming you have all the pouches, you could make 108 Nature Runes per run, each run takes about 2 minutes, that's 30 runs an hour. You would craft around 3000 Runes an hour, if you sell them 300 Gold Pieces each you would make 900k an hour.
